Statistics for the Hinckley Public Library District from July 1, 2017 through June 30, 2018
*Numbers in parenthesis are FY2017 comparison figures.*
Usage Of The Library
The number of people that visited the library this past fiscal year was 17,597 (20,136). A total of 3,191 (3,323) people attended our programs with 2,414 (2,499) attending children’s programs and 777 (754) attending adult programs. We offered 218 (254) programs – 111 (131) of which were children’s programs and 107 (120) were adult programs. With fewer programs this year the average attendance per event increased by 1.5 people. The programming costs in FY18 were $4,112 ($3,837).
Summer Reading Stats
In FY18, 188 (151) children signed up for summer reading. 29 (27) teen readers and 129 (105) adult readers signed up. There was a 70% increase in participants over the last two years and the total of 346 (283) participants set an all-time record for our library for the second year in a row. Participation increased as well. In FY17 969 reading logs were turned in and in FY18 there were 1,036. The community loves the simple reading logs and abundance of prizes. Keeping the rules consistent for the last two years has definitely improved participation.
Number Of Items Checked Out
9,616 (10,863) adult items were checked out in FY18. 11,095 (12,447) children’s items and 840 (1,070) young adult items were checked out for a total of 21,551 (24,380) items. This included 16,938 (18,957) books. Magazines accounted for 647 (687) checkouts; DVDs accounted for 2,719 (3,328) checkouts. 1,192 (1,331) audio books were checked out. Our patrons checked out 2,139 (1,897) e-books, the only circulation number that increased. There was a 3% decrease in circulation across all of PrairieCat this year. The largest member library, Moline, saw a 3% decrease; Malta saw a 20% decrease. We were down by 11% excluding e-books, which were up by 11%.
Interlibrary Loan
This year we loaned 3,569 (3,163) items and borrowed 3,262 (3,712) from other libraries.
Card Holders
Of the 2,802 residents of our library district, 718 (750) are library cardholders. Despite adding 141 new patrons this year, our expiring patrons outweighed our new ones. We sold 23 (13) non-resident cards this year.
Materials Owned
At the end of FY18, the library owned 16,652 (16,581) books, 65,754 (58,537) e-books, 1,234 (1,189) audio books, 1,234 (1,185) DVDs, and 38 (37) magazines. We donated the library’s collection of microfilm to the Hinckley Historical Society this year in hopes that it would see more use in their facility. We own a Hinckley obituary index dating from 1887-2001, a marriage index dating from 1878-1946, and a Sandwich obituary index dating from 1905-2003.
Technology
2,984 (3,711) patrons used our public computers in FY18 and 1,855 (2,095) used our wifi. Our Facebook page has 268 followers. Since we created our new website in September 2017 it has had 4,004 visitors, 2,065 of them unique.
Receipts & Expenditures
The library received $178,844 ($176,881) in levied local taxes. The library received Per Capita funds of $2,176 ($2,160) and $10,276 ($8,174) in private donations. Salaries and wages for all library staff totaled $108,198 ($104,655). Expenses for materials including books, magazines, DVDs, e-books, etc. totaled $21,682 ($22,217).
