He was born on October 17, 1972, in St. Joseph, Missouri. he was born to Marshall Mathers Jr., who left while he was still an infant, and his mother, Deborah "Debbie" Nelson. As a result of his father's leaving, Debbie, a single mother who struggled to hold a job, had to move frequently. Often leaving Marshall in public housing projects, also in and out of schools. This left a large impact on his life, having no close friends, keeping to himself, and being an outcast in each new school, resulting in violent bullying. Entering high school, although he had a bad childhood and allegations of abuse, he loved English and wanted to have those words at his disposal. He started his rapping career at clubs in Detroit at the age of 14. These absences caused him to fail the 9th grade three times before he dropped out at the age of 17 to pursue his music career. Choosing the name Eminem as a nod to his initials M.M., he made a career in the hip-hop underground as a solo artist and in the band D12 before becoming the well-known artist he is now.
