Life Background

Irene and Ellen Kossoy were born in Greenwich Village, New York on May 11th, 1938. At the age of six, they began singing together, imitating the harmonies of their mother and aunt. They also attended summer camps for folk music through their teens. When they were 17, they released their first album "Bowling Green" and became a significant part of the folk music movement in the 1950's.
