Ingredients

1 lb ground chuck Salt and Pepper
4 slices of a good melting cheese (e.g., American, Cheddar, Swiss) 4 quality burger buns
Sliced tomatoes, sliced red onions lettuce leaves, pickles
ketchup, mustard 1 tbsp butter or vegetable oil for cookings

Instructions

Form the patties: Gently form the ground beef into four equal-sized patties, slightly larger than the buns to account for shrinkage during cooking. Avoid overmixing the meat, which can result in tough burgers. Press a small indent in the center of each patty with your thumb to prevent them from puffing up. Season: Season both sides of the patties generously with salt and pepper right before cooking. Cook the burgers: Skillet/Griddle: Preheat a large skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Add butter or oil. Place the patties in the pan (working in batches if necessary) and cook for 3-5 minutes per side, depending on desired doneness. Grill: Preheat the grill to high heat. Lightly oil the grates. Place the patties on the grill and cook for about 6-8 minutes total, flipping once, or until they reach your desired level of doneness. Add cheese: During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of cheese on top of each patty to melt. Toast the buns: Lightly butter and toast the burger buns in a separate pan or on the cooler part of the grill until golden brown. Assemble: Build your burger on the toasted bun, adding your desired toppings and condiments. Serve immediately.
